Alcohol Calories Calculator

Pick a drink or type in the volume and ABV, the alcohol percentage printed on the can or bottle. You get the calories from the alcohol itself, an estimate for the carbs, the total for the number of drinks you had, and how long you would need to walk to burn it off.

Your drink

Lager is about 3 g, dry wine 0.3 to 0.9 g, spirits 0 g.

Calories for 1 drink

131kcal

131 kcal per drink: 91 from alcohol, 40 from carbs (estimate).

13.0g alcohol per drink
30minutes of walking
n/akcal per week

Walking at 3.5 MET for a 70 kg adult burns about 4.3 kcal a minute.

How the number is worked out

Alcohol carries 7 calories per gram. To find the grams, multiply the volume in mL by the ABV, then by 0.789, the density of ethanol in grams per mL:

alcohol kcal = mL × (ABV ÷ 100) × 0.789 × 7

Carbs add 4 calories per gram on top. A pale lager has about 3 g of carbs per 100 mL, dry wine 0.3 to 0.9 g, and spirits none. Sweet drinks like an Aperol Spritz or Baileys carry far more, so their presets use higher figures. Brewers rarely print carbs outside the US, which is why the carb line is marked as an estimate and you can change it.

The walking figure uses 3.5 MET, a brisk walk, for a 70 kg adult: about 4.3 calories a minute.

Three worked examples

A 330 mL Heineken at 5 percent. 330 × 0.05 × 0.789 × 7 gives 91 calories from alcohol. Add about 10 g of carbs and the bottle comes to roughly 131 calories. A 330 mL Kingfisher at 4.8 percent gives 87 from alcohol.

A 44 mL shot of vodka at 40 percent. 44 × 0.40 × 0.789 × 7 gives 97 calories, all from the alcohol. A mixer changes that fast: a can of regular cola adds about 140.

A 150 mL glass of red wine at 13 percent. That is 108 calories from alcohol and about 5 from carbs, so roughly 113. Two glasses a night, five nights a week, comes to about 1,130 calories, or around four and a half hours of walking.
