Best Fasting App With Coaching in 2026 (Compared) โ€‹

โ€ข Written by NutriScan Team โ€ข App ComparisonNutrition Tips

A 2025 component network meta analysis in the Journal of Medical Internet Research reviewed 68 randomised trials and 151 trial arms to work out which parts of a digital weight loss program actually drive results (Nunns et al., 2025). Out of nine common features, three came out as best bets: clear education, incentives, and contact with a specialist. They pointed towards weight loss most consistently, though usually not at a significant level. A model combining all three, a combination no trial in the set actually ran, estimated 2.52 kg more weight loss at six months.

As a NutriScan nutritionist, I read that as a simple message. A fasting app that only counts down a clock is missing the one ingredient the evidence keeps pointing at, which is guidance.

That is the gap coaching fills. A timer tells you when to eat. A coach helps you decide what to change when the scale stalls, when hunger spikes at hour 14, or when a work dinner blows up your window. The fasting apps worth paying for in 2026 wrap the timer in that kind of support.

TL;DR

Simple is the best all in one fasting app with coaching for most people, though it publishes no price and its App Store SKUs run from $14.99 to $59.99. Noom has the deepest behaviour change coaching but treats fasting as a side feature. Fastic teaches fasting best through real courses. NutriScan gives you the whole fasting timer free plus a voice nutritionist you can call, and it reads cooked meals from a photo. YAZIO is the value pick if you do not want a chat coach at all.

What a Fasting App With Coaching Must Actually Do ๐ŸŽฏ โ€‹

"Coaching" is a word every app slaps on a paywall, so it helps to define it. A fasting app that truly coaches has to do three jobs a plain timer skips.

Job 1: Give real guidance, not just a clock โ€‹

Coaching means structured direction you can act on. That can be a chat coach that answers questions, a voice call with a nutritionist, a human coach with weekly check ins, or a proper course that teaches you the why behind fasting. A countdown by itself never tells you what to do next.

Job 2: Support the habit so you keep going โ€‹

Fasting only works if you stick to it. The research further down shows that the pattern you can maintain matters more than the exact hours. Good coaching uses lessons, streaks, reminders and psychology to keep you engaged past the first excited week.

Job 3: Let the coach see your food โ€‹

Advice is only as good as the data behind it. A coach that cannot see what you ate is guessing. So the app needs to log your meals and your fasting window together, in one place, so the guidance is built on your real days.

Judge every coaching app on those three jobs. Most are strong at one and thin on the others.

Two panels side by side, a kitchen timer beside an empty plate on the left and the same timer beside a full healthy plate with a friendly coach face in a green speech bubble on the rightThe difference a coaching app is actually selling you. Same timer on both sides, but only one of them has an opinion about what lands on the plate.

Man standing alone in a field, restlessly waiting for the time to passThis is what a fasting app without coaching feels like at hour 14. The clock is running, and nobody is telling you what to do with the feeling.

Before you shortlist anything, run the free NutriScan Macro Calculator so you know the numbers your eating window has to hit. Picking a coach before you know your target is asking for directions without a destination.

๐Ÿงฉ The free four calls a week (coming soon)

1. Simple: Best All in One Coaching, Fasting and Food ๐Ÿฅ‡ โ€‹

Simple is my top pick for most people who want fasting and coaching in one app, and on convenience it is not a close call. Fortune's 2026 roundup named it the best intermittent fasting app overall, scored it 4 out of 5 and praised its elegant interface and approachable coaching style (Fortune, updated 29 July 2026). Simple's own FAQ describes the method as behaviour change coaching that covers nutrition, activity and safe intermittent fasting, without calorie counting or cutting out food groups (Simple, 2026). The coach is an AI character called Avo, now joined on the site by a second character, Blinky.

What makes Simple work for this topic is that all three jobs live on one screen. The fasting timer, the photo food log and the coach are stitched together, so Avo can react to your actual meals and your actual window instead of serving generic tips. Ask it why you are hungry an hour into your fast, or whether a late dinner ruined your day, and it answers in plain language based on what you logged.

On price, Simple is hard to pin down, and that is the honest caveat on the top spot. Its help centre says the cost depends on the plan you are offered and is only shown at the point of purchase (Simple help centre, 17 June 2026). The US App Store currently lists nine concurrent Simple SKUs from $14.99 to $59.99 with no duration labels on any of them (checked 7 August 2026). The one SKU Apple actually labels Premium is $59.99, which is exactly $5.00 a month and matches NutriScan's annual price rather than undercutting it. Monthly billing is $29.99 (Fortune, updated 29 July 2026), so annual is still the sane way to buy it. The free tier covers basic tracking of fasts, meals, hydration, weight and activity, two Avo replies a day and one Avo Vision scan a day (Simple help centre, 20 March 2026), which is enough to test the workflow before you find out which offer you land on.

Honest caveats

Avo is an AI, not a human dietitian, so it will not catch everything a person would. The food database is lighter than a dedicated calorie tracker, so heavy macro trackers will feel the ceiling.

Pick Simple if your blocker is "I start fasting and quit by Wednesday". Its daily nudges and low friction logging are built for exactly that. Our Simple pricing breakdown covers what Premium adds over the free tier.

Start NutriScan onboarding to personalize your plan

2. Noom: Deepest Behaviour Change Coaching ๐Ÿง  โ€‹

Noom is the pick when the hard part is not the fasting hours but your relationship with food. It is built on psychology based coaching: short daily lessons drawn from cognitive behavioural therapy, plus food logging, plus optional human coaching and group support (Noom, 2026). It teaches you to notice triggers, cravings and habits, which is a different job from telling you when to stop eating.

For coaching depth, nothing else on this list matches it. You get a structured curriculum, a coach you can message on some plans, and a peer group. That lines up neatly with the research hook, because contact with a specialist and clear education were two of the three best bets in the Nunns analysis, and Noom leans into both.

The trade offs are real. First, Noom is a weight loss and habit program, not a fasting first app. There is no dedicated fasting engine with protocol presets the way Simple, Fastic, NutriScan and YAZIO have. Noom's own article on intermittent fasting says the program fits alongside styles like 16:8 and 5:2, then lists the colour coded food system, the food logger, daily lessons, coaching and the water tracker, and never mentions a timer of any kind (Noom, 2024). If a schedulable fasting timer is your main need, Noom is the wrong shape. Second, it is the priciest coaching here. Noom Weight is $209 up front on the 12 month plan, which works out at $17.42 a month, and month to month billing is $70 (Noom, updated 27 July 2026).

Pick Noom if habits are the fight. Buy it for the psychology, not for the fasting clock. Our Noom pricing breakdown splits Noom Weight from the medication programs, which are priced separately.

3. Fastic: Best Fasting First Course Coaching ๐Ÿ“š โ€‹

Fastic is the strongest fasting first option that still calls itself a coach, and its coaching arrives mostly through content. The Fastic Academy delivers structured courses that teach the mechanics of fasting, though it sits inside Fastic Plus rather than the free tier. Fasty, the AI chatbot, answers questions, and the app layers on a step counter, water tracking and reminders, plus a Body Status timer that names the phase your body is in, ketosis or fat burning, at each stage of the fast (Fastic on Google Play, updated 2 July 2026).

Its free tier is unusually generous, and Fastic's own listing is the proof. The food and calorie tracker, the Fastic Food Scanner, the restaurant menu scanner, the Fasty chatbot, Body Status phase tracking, the step counter and the water tracker all sit in the base feature block, outside the Fastic Plus block (Fastic on Google Play). The Academy, the recipe book, challenges and buddies are Plus, so you can test the timer and the scanners for free but you cannot take the course for free. Plus lists at $79.99 a year, though a $29.99 annual SKU is live at the same time and the monthly SKUs run $12.99, $14.99 and $19.99 (App Store SKUs, checked 7 August 2026). Plus adds 4,500 plus recipes and the full personalised plan (Fastic pricing 2026).

Where Fastic trails Simple is on Job 3. Its food database and logging are lighter, so the meal side of the loop is weaker, and the coaching is more lessons and content than a responsive conversation.

Pick Fastic if you are a beginner who wants to understand fasting through a real course, and you want to test the timer and the scanners for free before you pay for the Academy.

โณ The free four calls a week (next after the numbers)

4. NutriScan: Free Timer, Voice Nutritionist, Honest Food Log ๐Ÿฅ— โ€‹

I will be direct about why our own app sits here rather than at the bottom of a coaching list. NutriScan is not a course platform and it does not assign you a human coach. What it does is give away the two things other apps charge for and then guess at: the whole fasting timer, and a nutritionist you can actually talk to.

The fasting timer is free and complete. Open the Fasting tab in the top tabs next to Overview and Club, pick 14:10, 16:8, 18:6, 20:4 or a custom window on a 1 to 23 hour slider, and you get a ring countdown, smart start suggestions, a halfway milestone and a completion notification. You can edit a start or end time retroactively for up to seven days, change plans mid fast, keep a streak at 80 percent of target, read a weekly Mo to Su bar chart of fasting hours, sync sessions to Apple Health or Google Fit, and export the whole history as CSV. Path: Home > Top Tab "Fasting".

The guidance is a conversation, not a curriculum. Monika is a voice AI nutritionist you call from the Home screen. You can ask her why hunger spikes late in a fast, what to eat first when the window opens, or you can simply tell her what you ate and she logs the meal for you. Alongside that, NutriBites lets you interrogate your own meal timeline in text, and Progress turns your week into readiness scores, protein hit rates and NutriScore trends.

The food log is built for the meal that breaks the fast. Photograph the plate and NutriScan asks you to confirm the two things no database can know: cooking method, from 11 options including deep fried, air fried and stir fried, and oil level, on a slider from No Oil to High Oil. O'Hara et al., 2025 tested ChatGPT-4 on 114 meal photographs and found it underestimated 11 of 16 nutrients, with weight estimates that agreed well on small portions and poorly on medium and large ones. The paper did not test a confirmation step. Our own position is that asking the person for what the picture cannot show is the fix, and that is exactly what the Meal Scan flow forces. For a curry, a rice bowl, a street food plate or a restaurant meal with no barcode, it is faster and more honest than hunting search results. Every meal also gets a NutriScore so quality is visible, not just calories.

On Premium, the Diet Plan adds the structured side: a 28 day plan built from your goal, cuisine preferences and macros, with a grocery list and two meal options per eating slot.

NutriScan limitations for fasters

  • No fasting academy or lesson curriculum. Fastic and Noom teach better.
  • No human coach and no peer group.
  • The free plan caps you at 5 scans a week and 4 Monika calls a week. Premium at $59.99 a year removes both.
  • No large recipe catalogue like YAZIO's.

Pick NutriScan if you want the timer free, your eating window is full of cooked, mixed or restaurant food, and you would rather talk to a nutritionist than read a module. If your priority is a timer plus a food log and coaching is secondary, our fasting timer and food log comparison ranks the same field on that narrower job.

5. YAZIO: Budget Structure Without a Chat Coach ๐Ÿ’ฐ โ€‹

YAZIO earns a spot with a caveat: its coaching is light. There is no chat coach and no human check in. What you get instead is structure, which is a form of guidance many people need more than conversation. YAZIO ships built in fasting timers for 16:8 and 5:2 on the free tier, plus one of the better calorie and macro trackers, recipes and guided plans.

The draw is value. YAZIO PRO lists at $47.90 a year, which is $3.99 a month, and Apple shows no monthly SKU at all: the shortest term on the listing is 3 months at $23.99. Four cheaper annual SKUs run alongside the list price, at $32.99, $29.99 and $23.90 twice, so the price you see depends on the promo (App Store SKUs, checked 7 August 2026). The 16:8 and 5:2 timers sit outside the Go Pro block on YAZIO's own listing, so they are usable before you pay a cent (YAZIO on Google Play, updated 7 August 2026). See our YAZIO pricing breakdown for what PRO adds.

Pick YAZIO if you are self directed and want strong tools with light hand holding.

Radar chart with our own scores for Simple, Noom, Fastic and NutriScan on real guidance, habit support, whether the coach sees your food, fasting timer, free tier and price valueFigure 1: These are our scores, not vendor data. Noom wins on guidance and habit support but sits at zero on the timer axis because it publishes no fasting timer. NutriScan wins on letting the coach see your real food, and Simple is the most balanced shape of the four.

What the Research Says About Coaching and Fasting ๐Ÿ”ฌ โ€‹

Two findings shape how I rank these apps, and both point the same way.

First, coaching is one of the few digital features with a consistent signal. In the Nunns 2025 component network meta analysis of 68 trials and 151 trial arms, most digital add ons did not clearly beat the alternatives, but contact with a specialist, education and incentives came out as the three best bets. A model combining them, a combination no trial in the set actually ran, estimated about 2.52 kg more weight loss at six months and 2.11 kg at twelve months, and the twelve month interval only just clears zero (Nunns et al., 2025). A separate 2023 review of 26 systematic reviews covering 338 studies found eHealth weight programs beat no care, with effects running from 0.12 kg against face to face care up to 4.32 kg against no care, and concluded that interventions with human contact work better than those that are fully automated (Kupila et al., 2023).

Bar chart of the modelled extra weight loss linked to three coaching components in the Nunns 2025 analysis, 2.52 kg at six months and 2.11 kg at twelve monthsFigure 2: The coaching effect is consistent but modest, a little over 2 kg, and it is a modelled estimate rather than a program anyone tested. Support is not a miracle, it is a multiplier on the work you do.

Second, the fasting window itself is less magical than the marketing suggests. A 2025 network meta analysis in The BMJ pooled 99 randomised trials and 6,582 adults. Every intermittent fasting pattern beat eating freely, the differences between the patterns were minor, and only alternate day fasting beat plain daily calorie restriction, by about 1.3 kg in shorter trials (Semnani-Azad et al., 2025).

Put those together and the case for coaching is clear. Alternate day fasting aside, the hours matter far less than the marketing implies, so the real levers are sticking to the plan and eating well when you break the fast. Both are behaviour problems, and behaviour is what coaching addresses. It also explains why logging cannot be optional. Sticking with self monitoring was associated with better weight loss results in a 502 person trial (Burke et al., 2025), and results tend to fade around the six month mark when engagement drops off (Pujia et al., 2025). A good coaching app is really an engagement machine.

What Coaching Actually Costs in 2026 ๐Ÿ’ณ โ€‹

Column chart comparing yearly prices of fasting apps with coaching in 2026, from YAZIO at 47.90 dollars to Noom Weight at 209 dollarsFigure 3: Noom's coaching depth costs roughly two and a half times the next app on the list, and more than four times the cheapest plan here. Everything else clusters between $47.90 and $79.99 a year. Treat the middle of the chart as a range rather than a price list: Simple's $49.99 is one of nine concurrent SKUs, YAZIO's $47.90 is one of five live annual SKUs, and Fastic's $79.99 is the higher of two.

Prices are standard US prices as of mid 2026 and change by region.

Three practical notes. First, the sticker price is not the real price, because what the free tier includes decides how long you can test before committing. Second, annual is the only sane way to buy any of these. Month to month costs two to six times more per month, from Fastic's roughly double up to Simple's $29.99 against a $59.99 annual SKU, and YAZIO does not list a monthly plan at all. Third, prices are standard US rates as of mid 2026 and vary by region, so confirm on the store page.

The Coaching Call You Get Free Four Times a Week โ˜Ž๏ธ โ€‹

Here is the thing most people comparing these apps never find, because it is not what a fasting app is supposed to have.

Every coach on this list is text. Avo is a chat bubble. Noom's lessons are cards you tap through. Fastic's academy is a reading list. Typing is fine when you are calm and sitting down, and useless at hour 14 when you are standing in a kitchen deciding whether to break the fast on the wrong thing.

NutriScan's Monika is a voice call with an AI nutritionist, and the free plan includes four of those calls every week. Premium makes them unlimited. Path: Home > Click Call Button.

Man in flat cap talking on the phone in his kitchenPhoto by Kwami Fattah Al Sissi on Unsplash

NutriScan Monika voice AI nutritionist call screenMonika, the voice powered AI nutritionist. Path: Home > Click Call Button. Free plan includes 4 calls per week, Premium is unlimited.

Three things make the call format different from a chat coach.

  1. You can ask while your hands are busy. Cooking, walking, driving home past the restaurant you were going to cave at. That is when guidance is worth something, and it is exactly when typing loses.
  2. She can log the meal for you. Tell Monika what you just ate and it lands on your Home screen as a logged meal. The coach and the food log are the same action, which quietly solves Job 3.
  3. It is free four times a week, which is once per hard day. Most people do not need a coach every day. They need one on the day the fast wobbles.

That does not make NutriScan the deepest coach here. Noom still teaches better and Fastic still explains fasting better. But four voice calls a week plus a complete free fasting timer is the most coaching anyone on this list gives away for nothing, and it arrives in the format you can actually use mid fast.

Hands slicing food on a wooden board while preparing a mealThe meal that breaks your fast is the one your coach most needs to see. Confirm the oil and the portion, and the advice stops being generic.

7 Tips to Get Real Value From a Coaching Fasting App ๐Ÿ’ก โ€‹

  1. Pick your protocol and let the app hold it. Start with 16:8 if you are new. Set it once so the timer schedules and reminds you, instead of you deciding fresh each day. Removing the daily choice is half the battle.
  2. Log the meal that breaks your fast, every time. That first meal sets the tone for the whole eating window. If your coach can see it, the advice gets specific. Skip it and the coaching turns generic.
  3. Use the coach for the stall, not the streak. When weight loss pauses for two weeks, that is the moment to ask what to adjust. Do not wait until you are frustrated enough to quit.
  4. Do not trust the first photo estimate on cooked food. Confirm oil and portion on curries, fried items and restaurant plates. This is where hidden calories quietly cancel a fast.
  5. Read one lesson before you skip it. Course based apps front load the education the research says matters. Ten minutes of a lesson beats an hour of guessing.
  6. Set a re-check reminder for month three. Effects fade when engagement drops. Put a calendar note to review your targets before motivation dips, not after.
  7. Match hunger to protein, not to willpower. If you crash at hour 14, the fix is usually a higher protein last meal, not a stronger jaw. Ask your coach to rebalance the eating window rather than white knuckle the fast.

How to Choose in 5 Steps โœ… โ€‹

  1. Name your real blocker. Is it the fasting hours, your habits around food, or logging accuracy? The right app fixes your weakest link, not the loudest feature.
  2. If you want everything in one paid app, start with Simple. Timer, coach and photo log together, with a free tier generous enough to test before you find out which offer you get.
  3. If the psychology of eating is the problem, try Noom. Deepest behaviour change coaching, but accept that there is no fasting timer at all and the price is roughly two and a half times the next app on this list.
  4. If you want to learn fasting properly, look at Fastic. The phase timer, food scanner and menu scanner are free, and the Academy courses arrive with Plus.
  5. If you want to spend nothing to start, use NutriScan. The full timer, four nutritionist calls a week and 5 scans a week are free, and the oil and cooking method prompts make cooked meals honest.

A Note on Safety: Fasting Is Not for Everyone โš ๏ธ โ€‹

Talk to a doctor first if any of these apply

Intermittent fasting suits many people, but not all. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication that must be paired with food, live with diabetes, or have any history of disordered eating, speak to a doctor before you start a fasting plan. An app coach, AI or human, is guidance and not medical care, and it should never override your care team.

Conclusion: Buy the Coaching, Not the Countdown โ€‹

The research keeps landing in the same place. The fasting window is a structure, the meal is the result, and what decides whether you succeed is whether you keep going and eat well when you break the fast. Both are behaviour problems, and that is why coaching, not a fancier timer, is what your money should buy in 2026.

For most people paying for one app, that means Simple. Choose Noom if habits are your real fight, or Fastic if you want to learn fasting through proper courses. If you would rather start at zero cost, NutriScan hands you the full timer, four voice nutritionist calls a week and 5 scans a week, and its oil and cooking method prompts make the numbers you hand any coach honest.

The best fasting app with coaching is the one you will still be opening in month three.

Frequently Asked Questions โ“ โ€‹

Q: What is the best fasting app with coaching in 2026? โ€‹

A: For most people it is Simple, because it combines a fasting timer, an AI coach and photo food logging in one app. Price is the caveat. Simple publishes none, and its help centre says the cost is only shown at purchase (Simple help centre, 17 June 2026), with nine concurrent App Store SKUs from $14.99 to $59.99 and no duration labels. Choose Noom for deeper behaviour change coaching, Fastic for structured courses, or NutriScan if you want a free timer plus a voice nutritionist you can call.

Q: Does fasting app coaching actually help, or is it just a paywall? โ€‹

A: The evidence says support helps. A 2025 review of 68 trials and 151 trial arms found that contact with a specialist, clear education and incentives were the three digital features most likely to be linked to weight loss, though usually not at a significant level, and a model combining all three estimated about 2.52 kg more at six months (Nunns et al., 2025). No trial in the set actually ran that combination. Coaching mainly works by keeping you engaged, and engagement is what predicts results over time.

Q: Is a human coach better than an AI coach for fasting? โ€‹

A: A human coach catches nuance an AI misses, which is why Noom's optional human coaching is a strength. An AI coach is available all day, costs far less and reacts instantly to what you logged. A voice AI like NutriScan's Monika splits the difference, because you can ask out loud while cooking instead of typing. For everyday consistency, an AI coach paired with fast logging is enough for most people.

Q: Do I still need to log food if I am fasting? โ€‹

A: Yes. A 2025 BMJ analysis of 99 trials found every fasting pattern beat eating freely, the differences between the patterns were minor, and only alternate day fasting beat plain daily calorie restriction, by about 1.3 kg in shorter trials (Semnani-Azad et al., 2025). What you eat when the window opens is the lever. Sticking with self monitoring was also associated with better weight loss results in a 502 person trial (Burke et al., 2025). A timer without a food log is half a plan, and it is the half your coach cannot see.

Q: Which fasting app with coaching has the best free tier? โ€‹

A: Fastic, NutriScan and YAZIO. Fastic gives you a phase by phase timer, its food scanner, a restaurant menu scanner and the Fasty chatbot free, with the Academy courses behind Plus (Fastic on Google Play). NutriScan gives you the full timer covering 14:10 through 20:4 plus custom windows, four voice nutritionist calls a week and 5 meal scans a week. YAZIO includes 16:8 and 5:2 timers with a solid calorie tracker at no cost (YAZIO on Google Play).

Q: Can I use a fasting coaching app if I have diabetes or another health condition? โ€‹

A: Only with medical guidance. Fasting can affect blood sugar and medication timing, so if you have diabetes, are pregnant, or have a history of disordered eating, speak to your doctor before starting. Use the app for tracking and habit support, and let your care team make the medical decisions.
