Is Macrostax Free? Macrostax Pricing, Trial and Refund Rules

Macrostax's pricing page lists its monthly membership at $29.99 (Macrostax Pricing), while its Google Play description still says $19.99 a month (Google Play). Twelve days apart in September 2026, the website ran two different yearly sale banners with two different codes. As a NutriScan nutritionist, I read a lot of app pricing pages, and this is the most useful thing to know before you start the Macrostax setup questions: check the price on the screen where you pay, not the one you saw earlier.
So is Macrostax free? No. The app is free to download, but there is no free plan and no free trial. This guide puts together what Macrostax's own pricing page, help center, terms and app store listings said on September 29, 2026 about cost, trials, refunds and canceling. I also cover what the research says about the thing Macrostax sells: a set macro plan with meal plans built to hit it.

🔍 The line in Macrostax's terms about who its "nutrition coaches" are (revealed near the end)
TL;DR: Macrostax pricing in 30 seconds
• Free plan: no. The app is a free download, but you need a paid membership to see your plan
• Free trial: none for individuals. Only Macrostax Team, the gym version, has a 30-day trial
• Website prices: $29.99 a month, or $14.99 a month billed yearly ($179.88)
• App Store prices (US): $29.99 monthly, $179.99 yearly
• Refunds: "not under any circumstances," per the help center, though the terms leave room at the company's discretion
The quick answer: free download, paid membership
Macrostax's help center says it plainly: "we do not offer free trials or refunds" (Macrostax Help Center). You answer the setup questions, and then you choose a membership before you see your plan.

Macrostax, LLC is a Colorado company based in Boulder (Macrostax Terms). The current iPhone app has been on the App Store since June 2022. On September 29, 2026, it had a 4.1 average from 147 ratings, and its description says "170K+ people" have used Macrostax (Apple App Store). The Google Play version showed 3.5 stars from 81 reviews and 10K+ downloads.
What Macrostax includes
Macrostax is a macro plan and meal planner. It gives you daily targets for carbs, protein and fat, then builds meals that hit those targets. The Google Play listing names these main features (Google Play):
- Personalized macro plan. Carb, protein and fat targets based on your details.
- "Automagic" meal plans. One tap builds a day of meals that fits your macros, and you can swap meals.
- Smart Meals and recipes. Recipes with built-in portions, including no-cook and freezer-friendly options.
- Food tracking. Scan food, log meals and repeat favorites.
- Food database. "Over 1 million verified foods, including restaurants."
- Nutrient timing. Pre- and post-workout macros based on your workout schedule.
- Progress tracking. Weight and body measurements.
- Nutrition coaching chat. Called StaxChat inside the app.
The pricing page adds that you can switch between Fat Loss, Muscle Gain and Maintenance plans "at any time without any extra fees" (Macrostax Pricing). It also lists vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, dairy-free and gluten-free settings, and says: "we do not offer ketogenic settings at this time."
Two limits are worth reading before you pay. First, the macro plan uses "age, gender, height, weight, activity level, and goal settings," and Macrostax says it does not account for medical conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Second, changing your macros has changed over time. A 2022 hands-on review said the app gave no way to customize targets (FeastGood). The current App Store description lists "Custom Macros: set your own macros based on advice from a coach or medical professional," while the pricing page FAQ says you can do it "by reaching out to our support team." If adjusting your own numbers matters to you, ask support how it works on your account before you buy. Our guide to apps that adjust macro targets covers apps that do this on their own.

🧩 The line about who the coaches are (coming soon)
How much Macrostax costs in 2026
Macrostax sells two memberships for individuals. On September 29, 2026, the website pricing page listed (Macrostax Pricing):
| Membership | Listed price | Billed | Cost over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $29.99 a month | Every month | $359.88 |
| Yearly | $14.99 a month | Every 12 months | $179.88 |
The yearly plan is labeled "Save 50%," and the math matches: $179.88 is half of twelve monthly payments. The page says "90% of Macrostaxers have a yearly membership."
Twelve months of the monthly plan comes to $359.88
The US App Store listed two in-app purchases on the same day: "Macrostax Monthly Membership" at $29.99 and "Macrostax Yearly Membership" at $179.99 (Apple App Store). That is 11 cents more than the web price for a year, which is small but shows the two checkouts are separate.
The help center article on trials, dated February 28, 2024, gives the same monthly number: "sign up with the monthly subscription at just $29.99 to try it out and upgrade to the yearly at any time" (Macrostax Help Center).
For comparison, here is what two other macro coaching apps cost, from our own pricing guides:
| App | Monthly | Yearly | Free trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Macrostax | $29.99 | $179.88 ($14.99 a month) | No |
| MacroFactor | $11.99 | $71.99 ($5.99 a month) | 7 days |
| Carbon Diet Coach | $11.99 | $99.99 | No |
Figure 1: A year of Macrostax on the monthly plan costs five times a year of MacroFactor
MacroFactor prices are from our MacroFactor cost guide, and Carbon prices are from our Carbon Diet Coach pricing guide. Prices change, so check each app's checkout too. As Figure 1 shows, even Macrostax's discounted yearly plan costs more than a year of either of the other two apps.

Why you may see a different Macrostax price
Search results show more than one number. Here is where each comes from.
Google Play still shows $19.99 a month. The Play description, last updated October 22, 2025, says: "Our monthly membership is $19.99/month and yearly membership is $119.88" (Google Play). The website, the App Store in-app purchases and the App Store description now all say $29.99, so treat $19.99 as an older price unless your checkout shows it.
Sale codes rotate. On September 17, 2026, the site banner offered "50% off yearly membership + EXTRA 33% off with code LABOR33." By September 29, that code was gone. The banner now said the yearly plan saves "50% today, no code required," and a second line read "Use code GOAL50 for 50% off" (Macrostax Pricing). The page does not say whether GOAL50 comes off the already halved yearly price, and I did not create an account to find out. Enter any code before you pay and read the total on the payment screen.
Where you pay changes the rules. A website purchase is handled by Macrostax. An App Store or Google Play purchase is handled by that store, which affects how you cancel and how you ask for a refund. More on that below.
Is there any free way to use Macrostax?
There are two limited options.
1. Through your gym or coach (Macrostax Team). Macrostax sells a business version for gym owners and coaches. The Team page lists "Free app access for your clients" (Macrostax Team). The gym pays these monthly prices:
| Team plan | Monthly price | Active clients included |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $99.00 | 20 |
| Standard | $199.00 | 50 |
| Pro | $299.00 | 100 |
The Team page says annual billing saves 10% (Starter shows $89.10 a month) and offers a "30-Day FREE Trial" with a "money back guarantee" (Macrostax Team). That trial is for the business, not for individual users. If your gym already uses Macrostax Team, ask the front desk, because you may be able to join without paying yourself. The cancel steps are also different for Team accounts.
2. A free sample meal plan. The pricing page offers a "FREE Sample Meal Plan" in exchange for your email. It is a sample, not app access, but it shows the style of meals before you spend anything.
That is the full list. There is no free tier with basic logging.

Macrostax free trial and refund rules
Free trial: none for individuals. The pricing page FAQ gives the reason: "Due to the front-loaded information specific to each individual, we do not offer refunds or free trials" (Macrostax Pricing). Macrostax suggests paying for one month to try it instead.
Refunds: the help center and terms say slightly different things. The help center's cancellation article is firm: "We do not offer refunds under any circumstances as stated in our Terms & Conditions" (Macrostax Help Center).
The terms themselves leave a small opening. They say termination "does not entitle you to any refund of previously paid amounts," then add that the company "may from time-to-time issue refunds to users if the Company determines the circumstances merit such refund, in the Company's sole and absolute discretion" (Macrostax Terms). So you have no right to a refund, but you can still ask, with a clear reason.
If you paid through Apple or Google. Refund requests for App Store purchases go to Apple (Apple Support), and Google Play has its own refund rules (Google Play Help). Each store decides on its own rules.
Other terms worth knowing
- Canceling takes effect "at the end of your already purchased subscription period." You keep access until then.
- "Deleting the Macrostax application alone will not terminate your subscription."
- Disputes go to binding individual arbitration in Boulder, Colorado, with a class action waiver.
- The terms say the content and services are provided "for access and use only by persons located in the United States." That clause sits inside square brackets on the page, next to other bracketed template text such as "[WEBSITE TERMS OF USE LINK]," so it may not be final wording. If you live outside the US, ask support before you pay.
How to cancel Macrostax step by step
The steps depend on where you paid. Macrostax's help center says: "If your Membership screen looks different than that below, you either signed up through the App Store, through a Macrostax Team or are a Grandfathered account" (Macrostax Help Center).
If you signed up on the Macrostax website:
- Open the Macrostax app and sign in.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap Membership.
- Under Cancel Account, tap Stop Auto Renew.
- Check your inbox for the cancellation confirmation email and save it.
- Keep using the app until your paid period ends.
If you paid through the App Store: open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Macrostax and tap Cancel Subscription (Apple Support). In one Apple Community thread, a user wrote that Macrostax was "not giving me the option to cancel" (Apple Community). For App Store purchases, the cancel button lives in your Apple account, not in Macrostax.
If you paid through Google Play: open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel Macrostax (Google Play Help).
If you joined through a gym: follow the instructions on your Membership screen, or ask your gym.
Two rules from the help center: "We do not accept cancellations over the phone," and "it is the customer's responsibility to cancel their subscriptions." For billing questions, Macrostax lists [email protected], StaxChat in the app, and the chat on its website.
We use the same format in our MacroFactor cancel guide if you are comparing both apps.

✨ The line about who the coaches are (right after the research)
What the research says about macro plans and meal plans
Macrostax calls its approach a "scientifically-proven macro formula." It does not publish the formula, so I cannot test it. I can tell you what the research says about each part of the idea.
The exact macro split matters less than sticking with it. A 2020 network meta-analysis in the BMJ pooled 121 randomized trials with 21,942 adults. At six months, low-carb and low-fat diets produced similar weight loss compared with usual diet (4.63 kg and 4.37 kg). By 12 months, weight loss shrank for every diet pattern studied (Ge et al., 2020). My reading: a macro plan helps if it is one you can follow for a long time.
Calorie formulas are estimates. Apps that set targets from age, sex, height, weight and activity rely on prediction equations. A 2023 review compared five common equations against 353 measured values. The best one, Harris-Benedict, was within 10% for a bit more than 70% of white adults (Westerterp, 2023). That leaves many people 10% or more off. Plan to adjust your targets after two or three weeks of real results.
Tracking what you eat supports weight loss. A 2021 systematic review of 59 weight loss studies found that most programs using dietary self-monitoring, at high or low intensity, produced significant weight loss compared with control groups (Raber et al., 2021).
Apps help, but modestly. A 2022 meta-analysis of randomized trials found app-based programs produced weight loss that peaked at 2.18 kg at 3 months and was 1.63 kg at 12 months (Chew et al., 2022).
Total protein beats protein timing. Macrostax sells nutrient timing around workouts. A 2013 meta-analysis of 20 strength studies and 23 muscle growth studies found no significant effect of protein timing once other factors were controlled, and total protein intake was the strongest predictor of muscle growth (Schoenfeld et al., 2013). A 2022 meta-analysis of 74 trials found that eating more protein each day gave small extra gains in lean mass in people doing resistance training, with effects seen at 1.6 g per kg per day or more in adults under 65 (Nunes et al., 2022). You can estimate your own number with our protein intake calculator.
Meal planning is linked with better diets. In a 2017 study of 40,554 French adults, people who planned meals had higher diet quality and more food variety, and lower odds of obesity (odds ratio 0.79 in women, 0.81 in men). The study was observational, so it cannot prove planning caused the difference (Ducrot et al., 2017).
A meal plan pays off on the weeks you actually cook from it
Taken together: a macro plan with ready meals is a reasonable tool, but the value comes from months of use and from adjusting targets to your real results. That makes the yearly price a fair thing to weigh against how long you expect to stay.
What "nutrition coaching" means at Macrostax
You have been patient, so here is the line I promised. The pricing page promises "Free Nutrition Coaching" and says "our nutrition coaches are just a click away in our app" (Macrostax Pricing). The Team page describes "additional nutrition coaching from our team of certified nutritionists" (Macrostax Team).
The terms set a clear limit on what that coaching is: "Macrostax is not a doctor, medical professional, clinician or a licensed nutritionist, nor do we employ any such persons" (Macrostax Terms). They add that staff "cannot give you medical or healthcare advice or diagnosis, or create or provide nutritional prescriptions or prescriptive diets."
A certification and a license are different things, so these lines do not have to conflict. But it does mean the chat is support and accountability, not care from a registered dietitian. The terms list conditions where you must see a doctor first, including eating disorders, pregnancy, diabetes, food allergies, high blood pressure and kidney or liver conditions.
The 2022 FeastGood reviewer, who is a nutrition coach, used StaxChat and wrote that coaches were "not available on any weekends or holidays" at that time and that it did not feel like one-on-one coaching (FeastGood). That review is four years old, so ask in the chat when replies are sent.

5 tips before you pay for Macrostax
- Read the price on the payment screen. The web, App Store and Google Play listing disagree. Trust the checkout.
- Start with one month if you are unsure. Macrostax suggests this itself, and there is no refund on a yearly plan that does not suit you.
- Try the current code before paying yearly. Codes changed twice in September 2026 alone.
- Ask support about custom macros first if you already know your targets.
- Note where you paid, with your renewal date. Website, App Store and Google Play each cancel in a different place.
Is Macrostax worth the money?
Macrostax may suit you if:
- You want to be told what to eat each day, with portions already sized to your macros.
- You cook from recipes and like no-cook or freezer-friendly options.
- Your gym already pays for Macrostax Team.
It may not suit you if:
- You want to try before you pay. There is no trial and, per the help center, no refund.
- You mostly want to log food and set your own targets. Cheaper apps do this, and the cheapest nutrition app comparison lists the options.
- You follow keto or have a medical diet. Macrostax says its plans do not account for medical conditions.
- You live outside the US and the bracketed US-only clause in the terms applies to you.
If you want coaching that adjusts your targets week by week, compare MacroFactor alternatives before choosing.
Where NutriScan fits
I work for NutriScan, so read this section with that in mind. NutriScan (150k+ downloads, 4.6 stars) starts from what you actually ate rather than what you should eat.
You take a photo of your meal, tag the food type and cooking method, and the app estimates calories, protein, carbs and fat, which you can correct. The free plan includes 5 meal scans a week.

Home > Camera Icon > Click Picture
Setting your own macros is free and does not need a support ticket. Type protein, carbs, fat and fiber in grams, and the app works out your calorie goal with the 4-4-9 rule. If you do not know your numbers yet, "Auto-Set Macros by Goal" calculates them from your age, height, weight and activity.

Profile > Modify Macros
If you want a plan written for you, Premium builds a 28-day diet plan from your goal, food preference, allergens and meal times, with two options per meal and a daily target for calories, protein, carbs, fat and fiber.

Bottom Nav > Diet Plan
Premium removes the scan limit and unlocks the diet plan for about $59 a year. The details are on our NutriScan pricing page.

You finished the run. Save this before you pay.
⏱️ Progress 4/4 • ~12 minutes in • Nicely done
✅ Step 1: No free plan and no free trial for individuals; only gyms get a 30-day trial
✅ Step 2: $29.99 a month or $179.88 a year on the website, $179.99 a year in the App Store; Google Play still shows an older $19.99
✅ Step 3: No refunds per the help center; cancel where you paid, and deleting the app cancels nothing
✅ The coaches: the terms say Macrostax does not employ licensed nutritionists, so the chat is support, not dietitian care (revealed)
If you buy Macrostax, start with one month, check the code on the payment screen, and write down where you paid. If you already know your macros and just want to hit them, a cheaper tracker will do the same job.
FAQ
Is Macrostax free?

How much does Macrostax cost?
On September 29, 2026, the Macrostax website listed $29.99 a month, or $14.99 a month billed every 12 months, which is $179.88 a year. The US App Store listed $29.99 monthly and $179.99 yearly. The Google Play description still shows an older $19.99 a month and $119.88 a year.
