How Many Carbs on Keto Per Day and Which Fruit Fits โ

TL;DR - How many carbs on keto, and which fruit fits
โข The number: under 50 grams of carbohydrate a day for ketosis, 20 to 30 grams while you establish it. โข Fruit is arithmetic: a medium apple is about 21 grams net carbs, a whole strict keto day. โข What fits: avocado at 3.7 grams net, blackberries 6.2, raspberries 6.6, strawberries 8.6 per cup. โข The order: pick your number โก๏ธ do the fruit math โก๏ธ build the first week's food list. โข Sweeteners: pure monk fruit is fine, the bulking agent in the packet often is not.
As a NutriScan nutritionist, I get one carb question more than any other, and the answer starts with a single number: under 50 grams of carbohydrate a day is the broad guideline for reaching nutritional ketosis, defined as serum ketones above 0.5 mM (Leaf et al., 2024). That figure comes from the International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand, and it is the most defensible line anyone can draw across a whole population.
Fifty grams sounds generous until you weigh it against real food. One medium apple uses half of it. One cup of apple juice uses more than half. That gap between the number and the plate is why "does fruit break ketosis" gets searched almost as often as the carb limit.

How Many Carbs a Day on Keto, in Real Numbers ๐ข โ
Three numbers cover almost every version of the question.
Under 50 grams a day is the general keto threshold. Many things change how much carbohydrate one person can eat and still hold ketones above 0.5 mM, but under 50 grams daily is the working guideline (Leaf et al., 2024).
Twenty grams a day is the strict end. Harvard's Nutrition Source describes keto as typically under 50 grams of total carbohydrate a day, going as low as 20 grams, with roughly 70 to 80 percent of calories from fat, 10 to 20 percent from protein and 5 to 10 percent from carbohydrate (Harvard Nutrition Source).
Fifty to 130 grams a day is what most people mean by low carb rather than keto. No health agency has fixed that boundary, so treat it as a practical band. You will not hold steady ketosis at 100 grams, but you will still be eating far less carbohydrate than a typical Western day.
Total carbs or net carbs? Net carbs means total carbohydrate minus fiber. Fiber passes through largely undigested, so subtracting it is reasonable, but "net carbs" is not a regulated label term. Count total carbs for three weeks, then switch if you want more vegetables.

Four apples is roughly four strict keto days stacked in one hand.
Two Worked Carb Budgets ๐งฎ โ
Numbers make more sense against a real day.
Example one: a 68 kg woman, desk job, wants weight loss. She starts at 20 grams total carbs. Three eggs in butter with spinach is about 2 grams, chicken breast over greens with half an avocado about 5, salmon with roasted broccoli about 7. That leaves roughly 6 grams for a handful of raspberries or cream in coffee. After three weeks she adds 5 grams a week until the scale says she has gone too far.
Example two: a 90 kg man lifting four times a week. He starts at 40 grams, because a larger body doing glycogen-depleting work usually tolerates the upper end of the range. The extra 20 grams goes to vegetables and a cup of berries after training, not to bread.
For your own starting number, the online macro calculator gives you a carb, protein and fat split from your body stats, and the TDEE calculator gives the calorie ceiling those macros sit inside.

Does Fruit Break Ketosis? What the Math Says ๐ โ
Fruit has no special power over ketosis. Fruit sugar counts against the same daily budget as bread. The reason fruit ends so many keto attempts is portion arithmetic, not biology.
A medium apple with skin, 182 grams, carries about 25.1 grams of carbohydrate and 4.4 grams of fiber, so roughly 20.7 grams net and about 95 calories (USDA FoodData Central). At a 20 gram target, one apple is the entire day, and at a 50 gram target it is 40 percent of the day for 95 calories and no protein.

Same table, five very different carb costs: the scale is the only way to tell them apart.
The exceptions are the fruits that are mostly water, fiber and fat. A whole 201 gram avocado is about 17.1 grams of carbohydrate against 13.5 grams of fiber, leaving roughly 3.7 grams net. Berries land in a similar place, because their fiber is high relative to their sugar.
Juice is the worst case. One cup of unsweetened apple juice, 248 grams, holds about 28 grams of carbohydrate and 0.5 grams of fiber, so nearly all of it counts (USDA FoodData Central). Pressing an apple removes the fiber and the chewing time and leaves the sugar. Unsweetened applesauce is barely better at about 24.9 grams net per cup.
Apples on Keto: Every Version of the Question ๐ โ
People search this a dozen different ways, so here are the answers.
Can you eat one apple on keto? At a 20 gram day, a medium apple uses all of it and leaves nothing for vegetables. An extra small apple of about 101 grams is roughly 11.5 grams net, which fits only if everything else that day is meat, eggs, fat and leafy greens.
Can you eat green apples or Granny Smith apples on keto? Granny Smiths are the best apple for the job, by a thinner margin than the internet suggests. USDA lists them with skin at 13.6 grams of carbohydrate and 2.8 grams of fiber per 100 grams (USDA FoodData Central), so a medium 167 gram fruit is about 18 grams net, roughly 2 grams under a red apple of the same weight. Green versus red is a rounding difference, not a strategy.
Can you eat apples and bananas, or apples and pears, on keto? Not together and not on a 20 gram day. A medium 118 gram banana is roughly 23.8 grams net and a medium pear 21.5, so pairing any two fruits puts you past 30 grams before the rest of the day starts.
Can you eat apples on a low carb diet? Yes, easily. At 100 grams a day, a medium apple is a fifth of your budget. The same fruit is a fine low carb food and a poor keto food, because the two ceilings sit five times apart.
Fruit Carb Table: What Fits and What Does Not ๐ โ
USDA FoodData Central values per listed portion, net carbohydrate being total carbohydrate minus dietary fiber.
| Fruit and portion | Total carbs (g) | Fiber (g) | Net carbs (g) | Fits a 20 g keto day? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avocado, whole (201 g) | 17.1 | 13.5 | 3.7 | Yes |
| Blackberries, 1 cup (144 g) | 13.8 | 7.6 | 6.2 | Yes |
| Raspberries, 1 cup (123 g) | 14.6 | 8.0 | 6.6 | Yes |
| Strawberries, 1 cup halves (152 g) | 11.7 | 3.0 | 8.6 | Yes, most of it |
| Apple, extra small (101 g) | 13.9 | 2.4 | 11.5 | Tight, no room left |
| Granny Smith apple, medium (167 g) | 22.7 | 4.7 | 18.0 | No |
| Apple, medium (182 g) | 25.1 | 4.4 | 20.7 | No |
| Pear, medium (178 g) | 27.1 | 5.5 | 21.5 | No |
| Banana, medium (118 g) | 26.9 | 3.1 | 23.8 | No |
| Apple juice, unsweetened, 1 cup (248 g) | 28.0 | 0.5 | 27.5 | No |
Plotted against a 20 gram ceiling, the table splits into two groups. Avocado through strawberries sit under 9 grams net. Every apple except the extra small one, plus the pear, the banana and the juice, sits above 18.

Figure 1: Avocado costs 3.7 grams net, a cup of apple juice 27.5, a difference of more than seven times for foods people file under the same word.
The pattern is fiber ratio, not sweetness. Blackberries and strawberries taste sweet and still fit, because a third to half of their carbohydrate is fiber. Juice fits nothing, because almost none of it is.

Figure 2: Blackberries carry 7.6 grams of fiber inside 13.8 grams of carbohydrate. Apple juice carries 0.5 inside 28.

Seven Tips for Staying Under Your Carb Limit ๐ก โ
- Weigh fruit for two weeks. Apple sizes run from 101 to 223 grams in USDA's own portion data, so eyeballing a "medium" apple can be off by 10 grams of carbohydrate.
- Spend carbs on vegetables before fruit. Two cups of spinach, a cup of broccoli and half an avocado cost less than one apple and deliver more potassium and magnesium.
- Eat fruit whole, never drink it. Fiber is the only thing between fruit sugar and a fast glucose rise, and juicing removes it.
- Front-load protein at every meal. Protein blunts appetite better than fat, and hunger is what ends most 20 gram days in week two.
- Salt your food deliberately. Carb restriction increases sodium loss, and the headaches people call "keto flu" are usually electrolytes.
- Check labels on anything marketed as keto. Bars, tortillas and sweetened yogurts carry hidden maltodextrin, dextrose or fruit puree.
- Hold one carb ceiling for three weeks before judging it. Ketones swing day to day, and adaptation is not a 48-hour process.
TIP
Log the oil in the pan. A tablespoon of olive oil is zero carbs but 119 calories, and a keto day that stalls almost always stalls on calories, not carbohydrate.
Keto for Beginners: A Seven-Step Start ๐ช โ
This is the sequence I walk people through, whether they start in the UK, Australia, the United States or India. The grocery store changes, the steps do not.
- Pick your number. Twenty grams total carbs for ketosis quickly, 30 to 40 grams if you are large or very active, 100 grams if you want low carb and not keto.
- Set your protein floor before your fat. Aim for roughly 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Fat fills the rest of the calories, and it is a lever, not a target.
- Build a ten-item food list and shop it. Eggs, chicken thighs, ground beef, salmon, cheese, olive oil, butter, greens, broccoli and avocado cover week one without a recipe. Our ultimate keto grocery list and meal prep guide expands this into a full shop, and the keto grocery list generator builds one around foods you already like.
- Prep two proteins and two vegetables on day one. Beginner failures happen at 7 pm with nothing cooked.
- Log everything for 21 days, including the oil in the pan. You cannot stay under 20 grams by memory. After three weeks you can log selectively.
- Test, do not guess, in week two. Urine strips are cheap and useful early, blood meters are accurate, and either beats reading your mood as a metabolic signal.
- Plan the exit before you need it. Decide your maintenance carb level in advance, so coming off keto is a choice rather than a weekend that happens to you. A structured keto diet plan makes both ends easier.

Ten items, one shop, and the first keto week stops depending on willpower at 7 pm.
Step five is where most beginners quietly fail, because a carb ceiling only works if the number in front of you is what you actually ate.

A logged meal broken down per ingredient, with fiber and net carbs beside calories.

Two proteins and two vegetables prepped on day one is the habit that carries the first week.
Low Carb, High Protein and High Fiber: The Practical Middle ๐ฅฉ โ
Many people searching keto carb limits want something else: high protein, moderate fat, low carbohydrate, enough fiber to stay regular. That is easier to sustain than strict keto and does not need ketosis to work.
For protein: eggs, chicken breast, fish, lean beef, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, paneer, tempeh and seitan. For fiber without much starch: spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, chia seeds, flaxseed and berries.
- Breakfast: Greek yogurt with chia seeds and raspberries, or a three-egg omelet with spinach and cheese. Dairy free: tofu scramble with mushrooms and ground flaxseed.
- Dinner: salmon with roasted cauliflower and olive oil, or ground beef with cabbage and paprika.
- Batch cooking: chili, meatballs and shredded chicken freeze in portions, the single habit that protects a carb ceiling on a bad week.
- Vegetarian and Indian kitchens: paneer bhurji, egg curry without potatoes, soya chunks, tofu, sprouted moong in small portions, and besan or almond flour in place of wheat atta. Besan is lower in carbohydrate than wheat flour but not carb free, so it belongs in a low carb day, not a 20 gram keto day.
For muscle gain, hold protein at 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram and put carbohydrate around training. For weight loss, hold the same protein and let fat come down.

Does Monk Fruit Break Ketosis? The Packet Is the Problem ๐ฏ โ
Here is the answer promised at the top. Pure monk fruit extract does not raise blood glucose in a way that ends ketosis. The sweetness comes from mogrosides, triterpene glycosides roughly 300 times sweeter than sucrose that the body does not use as a sugar (Shivani et al., 2021). A 2025 PRISMA-guided systematic review of five randomized controlled trials found monk fruit extract reduced postprandial glucose by 10 to 18 percent and insulin responses by 12 to 22 percent, with no severe adverse effects (Kaim and Labus, 2025). The extract is approved in the United States and China and still under review in the European Union.
The problem is almost never the monk fruit. It is what shares the packet. Pure mogroside extract is so sweet that manufacturers cut it with a bulking agent so a teaspoon measures like a teaspoon of sugar. Erythritol and allulose have minimal glucose impact. Maltodextrin and dextrose do not: dextrose is glucose under another name, and maltodextrin carries a higher glycemic index than sugar.
So the sweetener that keeps you in ketosis and the ingredient that takes you out of it are usually sold in the same jar, and only the ingredient list tells them apart. If "monk fruit" appears after maltodextrin, you are buying starch with a health halo. If the list reads monk fruit extract and erythritol, or monk fruit extract alone, normal use will not move you out of ketosis.
What the Research Actually Shows About Keto ๐ฌ โ
Three findings are worth knowing before you commit months to this.
Ketosis is a defined state, not a feeling. The ISSN sets the threshold at serum ketones above 0.5 mM and confirms that nutritional ketosis from carbohydrate restriction is not intrinsically harmful and should not be confused with ketoacidosis (Leaf et al., 2024).
Weight loss evidence is real but modest, and the LDL finding is consistent. A 2023 umbrella review graded 17 meta-analysis papers covering 68 randomized trials. Moderate quality evidence supported a decrease in body weight and hemoglobin A1c, while high quality evidence supported reduced triglycerides and increased LDL cholesterol (Patikorn et al., 2023). The authors call the LDL rise clinically meaningful.
For type 2 diabetes, keto has not beaten the comparison diets. A meta-analysis of 19 reports from 11 randomized controlled trials found no significant difference in glycemic control or body weight against control diets (Choy and Louie, 2023).
WARNING
If you take insulin, a sulfonylurea or blood pressure medication, take your carb number to your clinician before you cut. Doses often need adjusting when carbohydrate drops sharply, and a dose set for a 200 gram day can cause hypoglycemia on a 20 gram one.
Where This Leaves You ๐ โ
Your number is under 50 grams a day for general ketosis, 20 to 30 while you establish it, and 50 to 130 if what you want is low carb. Fruit breaks ketosis through arithmetic: a medium apple is 21 grams net, a banana 24, a cup of apple juice 27.5, and a 20 gram day cannot absorb any of them. Berries and avocado fit on their fiber ratio, and pure monk fruit fits because mogrosides are not sugar.
The part people underestimate is measurement. A 20 gram ceiling has no room for a guess, and plenty of people running keto by feel are eating 40 to 60 grams without knowing it. Whatever you track with, make sure it shows carbohydrate and fiber per food, not calories alone.
If photographing a plate keeps you logging longer than typing every ingredient does, NutriScan is free to try with 5 photo meal scans a week, and it shows carbs and fiber alongside calories.

Frequently Asked Questions โ โ
How many carbs a day on keto for a woman?
The same guideline applies to women and men: under 50 grams a day, often 20 to 30 while you establish ketosis. The 2024 ISSN position stand found insufficient evidence that the diet affects males and females differently (Leaf et al., 2024).
Can you eat apples on keto?
Rarely, and only in a small portion. A medium apple is roughly 21 grams net, a whole day at a 20 gram target. An extra small 101 gram apple is roughly 11.5 grams net and fits only if the rest of the day is nearly carb free.
What fruit does not break ketosis?
Avocado, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. A whole avocado is about 3.7 grams net, a cup of raspberries 6.6, a cup of blackberries 6.2, a cup of sliced strawberries 8.6. Bananas, grapes, mango and dried fruit fit no realistic 20 gram day.
How many carbs should I eat on a low carb diet rather than keto?
There is no official cutoff for low carb. Most people use 50 to 130 grams a day, below a typical Western intake but above the level that holds steady ketosis.
Does keto work better than other diets for weight loss?
Not reliably. A 2023 umbrella review of 17 meta-analysis papers covering 68 randomized trials found moderate quality evidence for weight loss on very low calorie ketogenic diets alongside a clinically meaningful rise in LDL cholesterol (Patikorn et al., 2023). In type 2 diabetes, 11 trials showed no significant difference against control diets (Choy and Louie, 2023).
What should I look for in a keto app for beginners?
Four things: a net carb figure visible per food, a daily carb target you set yourself, a food database with verified entries rather than crowd-sourced guesses, and a free tier that lets you test the logging flow before paying. Anything showing only calories will not keep you under a 20 gram ceiling.
