Lumen is a handheld breath analyzer from Meta Flow Ltd in Tel Aviv. Why Lumen has five membership prices
Most subscription apps I review have one monthly and one annual price. Lumen has cycled through pricing models since 2023, and pieces of each model are still live on different pages of its own site.
August 2023: subscription becomes optional. Before this date, a Lumen device did nothing without a paid membership. What the membership includes, and what stops when you cancel
Lumen's help center splits the product into two layers, and the split is the most useful thing to understand before you buy.
Device only, no membership (devices bought on or after July 30, 2023): unlimited breath measurements and your Lumen level from 1 to 5. That is the whole list.
With an active membership: measurement history, detailed results, a daily personalized nutrition plan with carb, fat and protein targets, a "Flex Score" for metabolic flexibility, guidance from Lumen's coaching team, and integrations with Apple Health, Google Fit, Garmin, Oura, WHOOP, Strava, Peloton and MyFitnessPal. The shop page also lists "AI-powered food logging" under the membership.
Two things are sold on top of the membership. The subscription policy, updated June 3, 2026, defines "Add-Ons" that can be one-time or recurring, and names two of them as excluded even from the lifetime subscription: "the Nutrition Guidance Program and AI features designated as an Add-On." What the four Lumen studies actually measured
Lumen's shop page says its technology "is validated by multiple peer-reviewed scientific studies and is proven to measure metabolism as accurately as the gold-standard metabolic cart." Four studies are indexed on PubMed. I read all four. Every one has Meta Flow employees as co-authors, which the papers disclose, and three of the four were designed by the company.
Validation against a metabolic cart, 2021. Thirty-three healthy adults, average age 23, breathed into a Lumen and a laboratory cart while fasting and again after drinking 150 grams of glucose.
