ChatGPT Calorie Counter Alternative That Keeps the Total โ€‹

Upload a photo of your lunch to ChatGPT and ask how many calories are in it. You get a number, maybe a macro split, in a few seconds. Then the number sits in a chat window. Nothing adds it to breakfast, nothing carries the protein into dinner, and tomorrow you type the prompt again. NutriScan does the same photo read with a food database behind it, lets you fix the portion, and keeps the running total for the day, the week and the month.

How good is ChatGPT at counting calories from a photo? ๐Ÿ”ฌ โ€‹

Better than most people expect at naming the food, and worse than they expect at sizing it. In a study published in the journal Nutrients in February 2025, researchers uploaded 114 meal photographs from a national dietary survey to ChatGPT-4 and asked it to name the foods, estimate their weight and estimate 16 nutrients. The results:

  • It identified the foods correctly 93 percent of the time.
  • Its weight estimates agreed with the real weights for small meals, and disagreed for medium and large ones.
  • It underestimated 11 of the 16 nutrients, and 13 of them were off by more than 10 percent.

That matches what happens at the kitchen table. Ask about "two eggs and toast" and the answer is close. Ask about a plate of biryani or a restaurant pasta and the portion is a guess. NutriScan's photo scan is a portion guess too, which is why the portion stays editable after every scan. The difference is what happens to the number afterward.

The part ChatGPT leaves you to do by hand ๐Ÿงพ โ€‹

๐Ÿ”ข

A running total nobody has to paste forward

Every meal you log adds to today. The Home screen shows calories, protein, carbs and fat against your target, and the number you see at 8 pm already includes the coffee at 10 am. With ChatGPT, each question starts from zero and the sum lives in your head or in a notes app. Free accounts get 5 photo scans a week; manual and voice entry are unlimited.

Portion you can correct

Plus and minus on every item, or type the exact weight. What you fix is what gets saved.

๐Ÿณ

Cooking method as an input

8 food type tags, 11 cooking methods, four oil levels. Fried and steamed do not come back with the same number.

๐Ÿงช

Macros and micros on every meal

Protein, carbs, fat, fiber, the top micronutrients and a NutriScore, on the free account.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ

History you can ask questions about

Meals stay in a timeline with a monthly NutriScore calendar, and NutriBites answers questions about them: what did I eat on days I slept badly, how much protein did I average last week. A chat window forgets the meal the moment you close it. Everything also syncs out to Apple Health or Google Fit.

How the scan works, step by step ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ โ€‹

Photograph the plate and tag how it was cooked

Open NutriScan, tap the camera and take the photo. Pick the food type from 8 tags such as home made, restaurant or packaged, the cooking method from 11 such as deep fried, grilled or steamed, and set the oil level across four steps. Those tags are the context you would otherwise have to type into a chat every time.

Photographed meal broken into items with calories and macros

Check the items and fix the portion

The meal comes back as separate items, each with calories, protein, carbs and fat, plus fiber, the top micronutrients and a NutriScore. Tap plus or minus on any item to change the portion, type an exact weight, remove something that is not on the plate, or add a side the camera missed by typing or speaking it.

Read today's total on the Home screen

Every logged meal adds to the day. The Home screen shows calories and macros against your target, the monthly calendar keeps a NutriScore for each day, and nothing has to be pasted forward into tomorrow's chat.

Cronometer's own blog said it in July 2025: ChatGPT "won't track your meals, set personalized targets, or help you monitor progress over time." They are right, and a database-search tracker like theirs fixes the memory problem. NutriScan fixes the memory problem and the typing problem at the same time.

What to keep asking ChatGPT ๐Ÿงญ โ€‹

Use it for the questions that do not need memory: what a reasonable protein target is for your weight, whether Greek yogurt or cottage cheese has more protein per 100 grams, how to make a meal lower in fat. Move the counting into something that keeps score. The test takes one dinner. Install NutriScan, photograph the plate, correct the portion if it is off, and look at the Home screen. If that total is worth five seconds, the habit holds.

If you want the target before the tracking, run your numbers through the macro calculator. The AI calorie counter page covers the scan itself in more depth, and if you also asked ChatGPT for a meal plan, the ChatGPT diet plan alternative page is the other half of this one.

Pretty good app honestly. Logging meals is fast and the macro breakdown is easy to read. Photo scan gets confused on some Indian dishes though, fix that and it's 5 stars for sure.

Frequently Asked Questions โ“ โ€‹

Are ChatGPT calorie estimates accurate? โ€‹

Good at naming the food, weak on how much of it there is. A 2025 study in the journal Nutrients uploaded 114 meal photographs to ChatGPT-4. It identified the foods correctly 93 percent of the time, agreed with the real weight for small meals, but disagreed for medium and large meals and underestimated 11 of 16 nutrients. Any photo estimate, NutriScan's included, is a portion guess until you correct it, which is why NutriScan lets you edit the portion after every scan.

Can ChatGPT calculate macros? โ€‹

It can produce a protein, carb and fat split for a single meal or a daily target when you describe yourself. What it cannot do is carry that split across the day. Each new question starts from nothing, so the 40 grams of protein at breakfast are not subtracted from anything at dinner. NutriScan sets your macro targets once, from your goal or from numbers you type in, and every logged meal counts against them.

Why not just save a ChatGPT calorie counter prompt and reuse it? โ€‹

You can, and plenty of people do. The prompt still has to be pasted for every meal, the answer still has to be written down somewhere else, and the same plate described twice can come back with two different numbers. NutriScan's scan takes the photo, the cooking method and the oil level as inputs, saves the result to your history, and adds it to today's total without any copying.

How accurate is NutriScan's photo scan? โ€‹

NutriScan's own checks put food recognition at 95 percent or better for foods the database covers. That number is about identifying the food, not about guessing how much is on the plate, so the portion, the cooking method and the oil level stay editable after every scan, and what you correct is what gets saved.

What does the free plan include? โ€‹

5 AI photo scans a week that reset weekly, unlimited manual and voice logging, calories and the four macros, fiber and micronutrients on every meal, a NutriScore on every meal, unlimited meal history, water tracking and the fasting timer. Premium makes scans unlimited and adds the 28 day diet plan and the full Progress tab, for about 59 dollars a year. There are two plans, Free and Premium.
