Pretty good app honestly. Logging meals is fast and the macro breakdown is easy to read. Photo scan gets confused on some Indian dishes though, fix that and it's 5 stars for sure.
Indian Food Calorie Calculator โ
Photograph your plate and NutriScan reads it, dal makhani and two rotis, a masala dosa, a plate of rajma chawal, a Hyderabadi biryani. You get calories, protein, carbs and fat in seconds, with an oil slider and a portion stepper so a home-cooked katori is not scored like a restaurant one. That is what makes it the best calorie tracker app for Indian food if you eat mostly home cooking. It is free to start: 5 photo scans a week, no card, and unlimited manual logging on top.

Why Indian meals break most calorie counters โ
Most trackers were built barcode first. A packet of biscuits scans fine. A katori of dal does not, and neither does a thali where five things share one plate and the ghee count is whatever your mother decided this morning.
So you end up searching a database, picking whichever user-submitted "dal tadka" looks closest, and repeating that five times per meal. Most people give up in week two. NutriScan removes the search box: one photo, the plate splits into items, and the two numbers that actually move the total, oil and portion, are sliders you set yourself.
What you get โ
Photo scan a whole plate
Dal, roti, sabzi, rice and salad come back as separate rows with their own calories and macros, so you can edit one item without redoing the meal.
Oil and ghee slider
Four steps, no oil to high oil, plus eleven cooking methods from deep-fried to steamed.
Type or speak instead
Out of scans or hands full? Log the meal by typing it or adding a voice note. Manual logging is unlimited on the free plan.
Macros and micronutrients
Calories, protein, carbs and fat, the top four micronutrients such as fiber, potassium and calcium, and a NutriScore on every meal.
Repeat your regular meals
Copy Meal to Today for your usual poha, or Start Daily Repeat and pick the weekdays. No rescanning the same breakfast for a year.
How it works โ
Snap your plate
Photograph the thali, the dal, the roti or the biryani. Before you hit continue, tag the food type as home made, restaurant or street food, pick the cooking method, and slide the oil level to no oil, low, medium or high.

Read the numbers and fix the portion
You get calories, protein, carbs and fat for the whole plate and for each item, plus the top four micronutrients and a NutriScore. If the AI read two rotis and you ate three, tap the portion stepper or type the number.
Repeat tomorrow without scanning again
Long press the meal and choose Copy Meal to Today for your usual poha or dal chawal, or Start Daily Repeat and pick the weekdays. Manage them later from Profile then Manage Repeat Meals.

Who this is for โ
- Home cooks. The same dal is 180 calories or 320 depending on the ghee. Set the oil level once per meal and the weekly average stops lying to you.
- Hostel and office eaters. Mess thalis and canteen plates get their own food type tags, because a hostel rajma and a restaurant rajma are not the same dish.
- Diabetes and PCOS plans. Carb totals per item let you see that it was the second roti, not the sabzi, that moved the number.
- Muscle gain. Protein from dal, paneer, curd, eggs and chicken adds up quietly. Work out your daily split with the macro calculator, then log against it.
- Anyone rebuilding a habit. 5 photo scans a week is enough for the meals you are unsure about, and manual logging covers the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions โ
Is the Indian food calorie calculator free? โ
Yes. The free plan gives you 5 AI photo scans a week, and the counter resets every week. No card is needed to start. Manual and voice logging, the calorie and macro dashboard, micronutrients, the NutriScore on every meal, the monthly insights calendar, water tracking and the fasting timer are all on the free plan too, plus 4 calls a week with Monika, the voice AI nutritionist. Premium removes the scan cap and adds the 28-day diet plan, the grocery list and the full Progress tab. NutriScan has two plans, Free and Premium, and nothing in between.
How does it handle a mixed thali and home-cooked portions? โ
A thali comes back as separate rows, so dal, sabzi, rice, roti and salad each get their own calories and macros and you can edit any one of them. The two things that swing home cooking the most are ghee and portion count, so both are yours to set. The oil slider has four steps, no oil, low, medium and high, and the cooking method list has eleven options including deep-fried, stir-fried, steamed, boiled, roasted and raw. If you ate three rotis and the photo showed two, change the portion with the plus and minus stepper or type the count. You can also delete an item or add one you forgot by typing or speaking it.
Does it know regional dishes, not just North Indian food? โ
It does. South Indian idli, sambar, masala dosa and upma, Punjabi rajma chawal, chole bhature and sarson ka saag, Gujarati dhokla, thepla and undhiyu, Bengali macher jhol, shukto and mishti doi, plus Maharashtrian misal pav and vada pav, all read as themselves rather than as a generic curry. Street food, hostel mess food, office canteen plates and hotel buffet spreads have their own food type tags, because the same paneer dish is cooked very differently in each place.
How accurate is the calorie count? โ
NutriScan's own accuracy checks put food recognition at 95% for foods our database covers. That is our figure from our own testing, not a published study, and it is about naming the dish. Portion size is an estimate from a flat photo, which is why every meal opens with an editable portion, an oil slider and a cooking method you can change. Two seconds of correction on the plates you eat every week is what makes the weekly numbers worth reading.
How is this different from typing food into MyFitnessPal or HealthifyMe? โ
Those apps start from a search box and a barcode scanner. A katori of dal has no barcode, so you search a list of user-submitted entries, guess which one matches your mother's recipe, and repeat that for every item on the plate. NutriScan starts from the photo: one picture of the thali, all items split out, then you adjust the oil and the portion. You still get manual entry when you want it, and voice entry when your hands are busy. The app runs in English, Deutsch, Espanol, Francais and Hindi.
