Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan App That Counts the Oil โ€‹

The Mediterranean diet is easy to describe and hard to keep honest. Fish, beans, greens, whole grains, yogurt, nuts, olive oil on everything. Nothing on that list feels like a diet food, which is the point, and also the problem: olive oil runs about 120 calories a tablespoon, a small handful of walnuts is close to 200, and feta is not a garnish. NutriScan builds you a 28 day Mediterranean plan with a daily target and a grocery list, then asks how much oil went in the pan when you photograph the result.

What the trial actually tested ๐Ÿ”ฌ โ€‹

PREDIMED is the study most Mediterranean diet articles are pointing at. In the version republished in the New England Journal of Medicine in June 2018, after the 2013 paper was withdrawn over randomization problems, 7,447 people in Spain aged 55 to 80 at high cardiovascular risk were assigned to a Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil, the same diet with mixed nuts, or advice to cut fat. After a median 4.8 years there were 288 major cardiovascular events: 3.8 percent in the olive oil group, 3.4 percent in the nut group, 4.4 percent in the control group. The hazard ratios were 0.69 and 0.72 against the low fat advice.

Two details get skipped in the summaries. The diet was energy unrestricted, so it was never a weight loss trial, and the participants were handed free olive oil or nuts, which is the opposite of guessing how much you poured. Eating this way to lose weight means the calorie target has to come from somewhere else.

Where the calories hide in Mediterranean cooking ๐Ÿซ’ โ€‹

๐Ÿซ—

Oil is an input, not an afterthought

NutriScan asks for the cooking method from 11 tags, deep fried through steamed and raw, and the oil level on a four step slider: no oil, low, default, high. Shakshuka made with a teaspoon and shakshuka finished with a generous pour are the same picture and different numbers.

Mediterranean is one of eight cuisine choices

The plan form asks which cuisines you enjoy and takes up to five: Indian, Mediterranean, East Asian, Latin American, Continental or European, Middle Eastern, American, African, plus a free text box. Pick Mediterranean alone for a clean run at it, or pair it with Middle Eastern if you want more mezze, or with your home cuisine so dinner still looks like dinner.

From cuisine preference to a plan you can shop ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ โ€‹

Pick your goal and set Mediterranean as your cuisine

The plan form asks for your age, height, weight, activity, eating schedule and goal, then for your food preference, Vegan, Vegetarian, Eggitarian or Non-veg, and any foods you cannot eat. On Your Cuisine Preferences you can select up to five styles. Choose Mediterranean on its own if you want fish, olive oil, beans and greens every day, or pair it with Middle Eastern for more mezze and grains.

Daily target and meal options in a NutriScan 28 day diet plan

Read the 28 day plan and pull the grocery list

You get a daily target for calories, protein, carbs, fat and fiber, then two options for every meal slot in your schedule, each with a quick recipe, a portion size and a nutrition breakdown. The Grocery List tab turns those meals into a weekly or monthly shopping list you can copy into notes. Edit Plan reopens the form, and Modify Macros under Profile lets you set the numbers yourself.

Photograph what you really ate, oil included

Take the photo, tag the food type from 8 options, pick the cooking method from 11, and move the oil slider across four levels: no oil, low, default and high. A grilled fish with no oil and the same fish finished with two tablespoons come back as different numbers. Correct the portion with plus and minus or type the weight, and the day's total updates on the Home screen.

The Mayo Clinic Diet answers "do I have to count calories?" with a flat no, and for plenty of people that works. It is also why a Mediterranean plan can run six weeks without the scale moving. Lifesum will count for you, but wants the food typed or scanned by barcode, which is a poor fit for a homemade tray of roasted vegetables.

Who this suits ๐Ÿงญ โ€‹

Someone who liked the idea of the Mediterranean diet, cooked it for three weeks and could not tell whether it was working. The plan says what to cook, the grocery list says what to buy, and the scan supplies the number the pattern leaves out. Run a week, set the oil level honestly, and read the weekly average rather than a single day.

Work out your numbers first with the calorie calculator if you want a target before you install anything. The monthly grocery list generator covers the shopping side in more depth, and NutriScan for weight loss is the page to read if the goal is the scale rather than the heart.

Pretty good app honestly. Logging meals is fast and the macro breakdown is easy to read. Photo scan gets confused on some Indian dishes though, fix that and it's 5 stars for sure.

Frequently Asked Questions โ“ โ€‹

What does a 7 day Mediterranean diet meal plan look like in NutriScan? โ€‹

The plan runs 28 days rather than 7, so the first week is one quarter of it. Each day gives you two options per meal slot, built from the eating schedule you set: something like Greek yogurt with walnuts and figs for breakfast, a lentil and roasted pepper salad at lunch, olives and hummus mid afternoon, and baked fish with couscous and greens at dinner. Every item opens into a quick recipe, a portion size, the nutrition breakdown and what to watch out for.

Is a Mediterranean diet meal plan good for weight loss? โ€‹

It can be, but only with a calorie target, because the pattern itself is not low calorie. Olive oil, nuts, cheese and bread are all in it, and the PREDIMED trial that tested it fed people an energy unrestricted version. NutriScan handles that by setting a daily calorie and macro target from your goal, age, height, weight and activity, then counting every logged meal against it. If you want to see the numbers before you install anything, the macro calculator gives you the same split.

How do I start the Mediterranean diet as a beginner? โ€‹

Change one meal at a time and shop from a list. Beans, lentils, canned sardines, olive oil, yogurt, whole grains, nuts and whatever vegetables are cheap that week cover most of the pattern. The grocery list NutriScan builds from your plan is weekly or monthly, so the food in the kitchen matches the meals on the screen. Red meat drops to a couple of times a month, fish comes in twice a week or more, and vegetables go on the plate first.

Does the app count olive oil and nuts properly? โ€‹

Oil is the input the scan asks about directly. The slider has four levels, no oil, low, default and high, and it changes the result, which matters because a tablespoon of olive oil is about 120 calories in USDA FoodData Central and a plate can easily carry three. Nuts and cheese come back as their own items with a weight you can edit, so a handful of walnuts is a number you can correct rather than a rounding error.

What does the free plan include? โ€‹

5 AI photo scans a week, unlimited manual and voice logging, calories and the four macros on every meal, fiber and micronutrients, a NutriScore per meal, unlimited history, water tracking and the fasting timer. The 28 day diet plan, the grocery list, unlimited scans and unlimited calls with Monika, the voice nutritionist, are Premium, at about 59 dollars a year. There are two plans, Free and Premium.
