Pretty good app honestly. Logging meals is fast and the macro breakdown is easy to read. Photo scan gets confused on some Indian dishes though, fix that and it's 5 stars for sure.
ChatGPT Diet Plan Alternative That Tracks What You Eat โ
Asking ChatGPT for a 7 day, 1,500 calorie diet plan takes about ten seconds, and the plan it writes is usually reasonable. Then Wednesday happens. Dinner is not the dinner on the plan, the chat has no idea, and by Friday you are guessing again. NutriScan does the half ChatGPT cannot: it builds the plan from your numbers, then photographs what you actually ate and keeps the daily total, so the plan and the plate stay in the same place.

What a ChatGPT diet plan gets you, and where it stops ๐ โ
Type "make me a 1,500 calorie diet plan for the week, vegetarian, I cook Indian and Mediterranean food" and you get something like this for Monday:
| Meal | ChatGPT's plan | Calories it lists |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Oats with milk, banana, a spoon of peanut butter | 380 |
| Lunch | Dal, one cup of rice, cucumber salad | 450 |
| Snack | Greek yogurt with a handful of almonds | 200 |
| Dinner | Grilled paneer with roasted vegetables | 470 |
| Total | 1,500 |
That is a usable day. When a registered dietitian tested the same idea for TODAY.com in 2024, she found the recipes sensible, the daily totals landing under her 1,700 calorie target on all seven days, and no way to check whether the calorie figures were right.
Now it is Wednesday. Lunch was a work thing, you ate a chicken wrap and half a plate of fries, and dinner turned into leftover pasta. Three things are now true:
- The chat does not know. It wrote a plan; it cannot see a plate.
- There is no running total. Nobody is subtracting the wrap from the 1,500.
- Next time you open a new chat, the plan is gone unless you saved it somewhere.
Cronometer, in a July 2025 post, put it plainly: ChatGPT "won't track your meals, set personalized targets, or help you monitor progress over time." That is the gap this page is about.
What NutriScan does with the same inputs ๐งพ โ
It sees the plate
Photograph what you ate and NutriScan reads it back as calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber and the top micronutrients, with a NutriScore for the meal. Set the food type from 8 tags, the cooking method from 11, and the oil level across four steps, so the fries come back as fries and not as "potato, 100 g". Free accounts get 5 photo scans a week; manual and voice entry are unlimited.
It keeps the running total
The Home screen shows today's calories and macros against your target, so the wrap at lunch changes what dinner should look like.
The plan has dates
A 28 day plan with a start, an end and a progress bar, built from your stats, goal, restrictions and up to five cuisines you actually cook.
Grocery list written for you
Weekly and monthly shopping lists generated from the plan. Copy them out with one tap.
Edit the plan instead of re-prompting
New shift pattern, a food you can no longer eat, a different goal: tap Edit Plan, change the answers, and the plan is rebuilt. After 28 days you renew it the same way. The macro sliders are yours too. If ChatGPT already gave you numbers you trust, set them in Profile, Modify Macros, and log against those.
How to move from the chat window to a plan that tracks itself ๐ ๏ธ โ
Answer the same questions you would type into ChatGPT
Age, gender, height, weight, goal, how active you are, what you will not eat, and up to five cuisines you actually cook. NutriScan turns that into a daily calorie target and a protein, carb and fat split. You can drag the sliders if you already know the numbers that work for you.

Get a 28 day plan with a grocery list attached
The plan comes back with a start date, an end date and a progress bar. Every day has meals against your target, and the Grocery List tab writes the weekly and monthly shopping list for you. It stays in the app, so you are not scrolling back through a chat to find day 12.
Photograph what you actually ate
Point the camera at the plate. NutriScan reads it back as calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber and micronutrients, and the Home screen shows how much of today's target is left. If dinner was not the dinner on the plan, the total still adds up, because it counts what went in, not what was written down.

ChatGPT, a meal plan generator, and NutriScan side by side ๐ โ
| ChatGPT | Eat This Much | NutriScan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writes a plan from your stats and goal | Yes, if you prompt it well | Yes | Yes, 28 days, from a form |
| Grocery list | If you ask for one | Yes | Weekly and monthly, from the plan |
| Knows what you actually ate | No | Only what you type in | Photo, text or voice; photo reads the plate |
| Running daily total against the plan | No | Yes | Yes, on the Home screen |
| Micronutrients and a meal score on each meal | No | Macro targets | Yes, on the free account |
| Plan still there next week | Only if you saved the chat | Yes | Yes, with dates and a progress bar |
| Cost | Free tier, paid for the better model | Free tier, paid plan | Free tier; Premium about 59 dollars a year |
Before you swap anything ๐งญ โ
Keep using ChatGPT for what it is good at: explaining why a plan is high in fiber, rewriting a recipe for two people, telling you what to do with a leftover cabbage. Move the part that needs memory into an app. The test is simple. Install NutriScan, photograph tonight's dinner, and look at the breakdown. If that number is worth five seconds of your evening, the tracking habit survives, and a plan with a habit behind it beats a better plan with none.
If you want to check the targets first, run your numbers through the macro calculator and compare them to what ChatGPT gave you. The diet planner page goes deeper on what the 28 day plan contains, and if you are coming off a paid tracker rather than a chat window, the MyFitnessPal alternative page covers that switch.

Frequently Asked Questions โ โ
Are ChatGPT meal plans any good? โ
The meal ideas are usually fine. A dietitian who tested it for TODAY.com in 2024 liked the recipes but noted the daily totals came out under the 1,700 calorie target on every one of the seven days, and that the calorie figures could not be verified. The bigger gap is not the plan, it is what happens after: ChatGPT has no way to know what you ate, so it cannot tell you where you stand on day 9.
Does NutriScan write the plan, or only track meals? โ
Both. The Diet Plan tab builds a 28 day plan from your body stats, goal, food restrictions and cuisine preferences, with a grocery list and a supplement and lifestyle tab next to it. The camera, manual entry and voice logging track what you actually eat, and the Home screen shows today's total against the plan's daily target. The plan is a Premium feature and new accounts get a 7 day free trial of it.
Can I keep the ChatGPT plan I already have and just use NutriScan to track it? โ
Yes. There is no import for a pasted plan, but you can set the daily calories, protein, carbs and fat from Profile, Modify Macros, to match whatever ChatGPT gave you. From then on every meal you photograph or type in counts against those numbers on the free account. When you want the plan itself to live in the app, the Diet Plan tab rebuilds it from the same inputs.
What happens when I go off the plan for a few days? โ
The plan keeps its dates and the log keeps counting. Each day's total starts from zero against the same target, so a bad Tuesday does not carry into Wednesday. If something changed for real, a new schedule, a food you can no longer eat, a different goal, tap Edit Plan and update the form. The plan is rebuilt from the new answers, and after 28 days you can renew it the same way.
What is free and what costs money? โ
Free gets you 5 AI photo scans a week, unlimited manual and voice logging, calories, the four macros, micronutrients and a NutriScore on every meal, unlimited history, water tracking and the fasting timer. Premium adds unlimited photo scans, the 28 day diet plan with grocery lists, and the full Progress tab. There are two plans, Free and Premium, and Premium works out to about 59 dollars a year.
